Esther-Lana obtained the degrees B.Proc (cum laude) in 1999 and LL.B (cum laude) in 2000 and was awarded the Dean’s medal as the best B.Proc and LL.B law student in the Faculty of Law, University of the Free State (UFS) and received honorary colours from the UFS for her academic achievements. In 2001 she completed the Certificate in Legal Practice of the Free State School for Legal Practice of the Law Society and was awarded Achiever Certificates in respect of Personal Injury Claims, Commercial Litigation, Wills and Estates and Forms of Business Enterprises.
In addition to her degrees, she served as a part-time external lecturer of Law and Governance at the Faculty of Humanities’ Programme in Governance and Political Transformation at the UFS from 2006 – 2008 and as co-lecturer of Administrative Law at the Law Faculty in 2005 and she was a tutor for the Law Society of South Africa’s LSSA-Distance Learning School for Legal Practice: Wills, Estates & Trusts in 2005 and 2006.
She commenced with her articles at Naudes Attorneys in January 2001 and was admitted as an attorney (2002) and a conveyancer (2007) of the High Court of South Africa. She worked as a professional assistant at Naudes’ High Court Litigation Department from 2002 – 2005, where after she joined Phatshoane Henney inc. as the Knowledge Centre Manager. Before joining the Knowledge Centre, Esther-Lana’s litigation experience included divorce and family law matters, executing counsels’ opinions on evidence in all insurance related claims, attending consultations and rule 37-conferences, appearing in the Motion Court, Maintenance Court & Southern Divorce Court, drafting rehabilitation, sequestration, liquidation and various other applications, including opinions on quantum of damages, notices and basic contracts and settlement agreements. She is currently employed at the Knowledge Centre and provides legal research to all the associated firms and attends to the day to day management thereof and various administrative tasks. In her spare time, she assists a local cost consultant with the drafting of Magistrate’s and High Court bills of costs.
