amendment of regulations relating to maintenance

The maintenance regulations have been amended by the insertion of Chapter 4A, which deals with the powers of Maintenance Investigators.

In short, a maintenance investigator, who must have his letter of appointment in his possession when exercising any power or performing any duty ito the Act or regulations, may examine a person who is likely to give material or relevant information about any complaint relating to maintenance; he may direct a person to identify himself to the satifaction of the invesigator and he may request a person to sign for a document relevant to a complaint relating to maintenance.

A maintenance investigator may for the purpose of service of process of any maintenance court or, subpoenas or summonses iro criminal proceedings for failure to comply with a maintenance order, call upon a member of the South African Police Service to render assistance to him where resistance to the service have been met or are reasonably anticipated and must, upon making such a request for assistance, furnish particulars of the complaint in which he
met resistance or the reason why he anticipates resistance.
