answering your BEE favourite asked questions

BEE is confusing at the best of times, and becoming BEE verified in terms of the BEE Codes of Good Practice could potentially be a minefield.
Why does my company need to go through the BEE Verification process?
A legitimate verification certificate is a business tool that enables a company to be recognised for its BEE status with the confidence that your status is accurate and verifiable. The process, done once a year will save businesses time since you will not have to provide possible clients with this information every time you tender.
A BEE verification certificate is the best way to effectively prove your empowerment status and to therefore position yourself competitively in government tenders and other business pitches.
Are there currently any accredited BEE Verification agencies (VA)?
The accreditation process by the South African National Accreditation System (Sanas) is on-going, and to date VA’s have not been accredited yet. The accreditation process should be complete by the end of the year.
If I receive a BEE Verification certificate from an agency, how do I know that my certificate will still be valid after the accreditation process?
All certificates issued by agencies that have applied for accreditation will be valid for their full duration, that is for one year. It is therefore important to know the effective date of your certificate and it is highly recommended that you select an agency that has taken the time and made the commitment to apply for accreditation.
What is the status of the accreditation process with Sanas?
Sanas is currently reviewing the documentation submitted by the Verification Agencies and the process of on-site assessment will commence shortly. The accreditation process should be completed by the end of the year.
How does Abva regulate the behaviour of its members?
Abva has a code of conduct which members must adhere to. Members who have complaints issued against them or who breach the code of conduct will be subject to a disciplinary process.
What recourse do I have if I am unhappy with my verification agency?
If the agency is an Abva member, the business can contact Abva to lodge a complaint and a disciplinary hearing will be undertaken.
