domestic workers get pay rise
30 November 2007

Domestic workers will have more to spend this festive season due to a wage increase effective from 1 December 2007, the national department of labour said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said domestic workers' wages will increase 9.3 percent from 1 December.

Salaries for employees working for more than 27 hours a week in urban areas will increase from R1066.83 to R 1166.05 per month.

"Employees working in rural areas for 27 hours or more per week are entitled to R946.04 as compared to R865.54 paid in 2006 to 2007.

"The hourly rate is now R5.98 for urban areas and R4.85 for rural areas," she said.

She said the increase was the result of the CPIX rate of 7.3 percent and an additional two percent as stipulated in the Sectoral Determination for Domestic Workers.

The new minimum wage for the sector will cover the period from 1 December 2007 to 30 November 2008.
