mind your language in the supreme court
12 April 2007

Court goers should watch their language in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) from next month, as lords and ladies will be no longer entertained. When the next court term starts on May 2, judges in the SCA will no longer be addressed as "My Lord", "My Lady", "Your Lordship" or "Your Ladyship", said a notice on the department of justice website.

"Instead, the Bench will be addressed through the presiding Judge and be referred to as "The Court", said the practice directive. "Where an individual member of the Bench is referred to this should be by using the Judges' surname preceded by the word "Justice".

"The current mode of address used in Afrikaans will continue to apply." The notice is to be put up on either side of counsels' bench in each court.
