Transformation Standards

The relevance of the PH Group to South Africa and the legal industry is personified by the collective commitment of member firms to transformation and diversity. Diversity is entrenched as a key value of the PH Group and seen as pivotal in firms transforming themselves to be true South African law firms – to be New Breed Law FirmsTM.

To evidence the communal commitment to transformation, the PH Group in 2014 adopted a set of transformation standards applicable to member firms and which forms part of the Group Standards that are reviewed every two years, with top-performing firms recognised by the PH Group for their commitment to transformation.

The compliance of firms with the PH Group transformation standards is monitored by the Regional Directors of PH Attorneys, who play an important role in guiding and assisting firms with their firm transformation plans. The PH Group also assists firms with strategic support, transformation initiatives, centralised recruitment etc.- all initiatives that help firms embrace and grow transformation within their firms.

PH Foundation

An important group transformation initiative is the PH Foundation, a charitable trust registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (067-759-NPO) and as a Public Benefit Organisation with SARS (tax exemption number: 930029536). The PH Foundation sources funds from donations and sponsorships received from member firms and their clients and allocates such funding to identified socio-economic development projects and beneficiaries.  One such project is the PH Group bursary scheme in terms of which member firms can apply on behalf of previously disadvantaged Candidate Legal Practitioners (CLPs) that apply to article at a member firm for a bursary from the PH Foundation, with bursaries awarded exclusively to CLPs articling at member firms. To date more than R1.7 million in bursaries have been paid to CLPs since the launch of the bursary programme in 2014.

Transformation Reports

As part of the certification process undertaking in respect of all member firms every two years, the PH Group conducts a comprehensive survey of the transformation initiatives and steps taken by member firms over the preceding two years. With the first Transformation Report released in 2015, the transformation reports show continuous investment and progress across the PH Group in transformation, diversity and socio-economic development and the leadership taken by the group in setting the standard for the transformation of the legal industry.

Bursary Programme Recipients: Testimonials

It is an honour to have been selected as a beneficiary of this distinct bursary. The bursary has assisted me greatly in settling my Law School fees (arrears) and has partially cushioned me with my living and travelling expenses. I greatly appreciate that the bursary has made my life easier. Thank you very much.

Justice Mudzamiri, Candidate Legal Practitioner
Drake Flemmer & Orsmond Inc.

I am forever grateful for the Phatshoane Henney Group. This bursary has helped me show gratitude towards my parents for emotionally and financially getting me through university to obtain my law degree. I know, that even today as a Candidate Legal Practitioner, they will continue to support me. I owe them everything and more!

Micaela Jacobs, Candidate Legal Practitioner
Van der Spuy & Partners

The bursary meant a great deal to me because it allowed me to pay off a number of debts which were stressing me out. It also allowed me to assist my mother with some of her obligations that she was struggling with now that my brother has started university. How it has helped catapult my legal career? The bursary helped catapult my legal career by enabling me to focus thereon without having to try and do odd jobs on the weekends to pay for the abovementioned debts.

Peter Mercuur, Candidate Legal Practitioner
Muller Terblanche & Beyers Attorneys

I am extremely thankful for the bursary that was awarded to me by the PH Group. As a Candidate Attorney , there are always extra expenses that are not accounted for, and the bursary has really helped ease this burden. It has also allowed me to think further into my legal career by affording me an opportunity to study towards the conveyancing and notary exams and registering for lectures when the need arises. It is a really great initiative, and I am truly appreciative of it. Thank you.

Manisha Padayachee, Candidate Legal Practitioner
Tatham Wilkes Inc.

Obtaining the bursary was first and foremost a privilege but also a blessing in disguise. I had outstanding student debt which I incurred during my studies and the bursary allowed me to settle that debt, allowing me to focus my energy on this new journey. The bursary also allowed me to create a conducive work environment which caters to my current needs as a candidate attorney. Most importantly, the bursary afforded me peace of mind.

Khanyisa Dubula, Candidate Legal Practitioner
Muller Terblanche & Beyers Attorneys

I am grateful for this opportunity, bearing in mind how hard or difficult it is to secure Articles, because there are thousands of law graduates out there. To be afforded such an opportunity is an opportunity of a life time. I am passionate about law and this allows me to fulfil my dream as I am saving from the stipend that we get so that next year I can spread my wings further in doing my Masters in Corporate Law. This bursary helped me as I am being exposed to different legal fields. I will be starting in a commercial department next week, so this opportunity will help me to grow and have more knowledge of the law.

Frank Ndlangamandla, Candidate Legal Practitioner
CBJ Attorneys

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to Phatshoane Henny for seeing me worthy enough to be a recipient of this bursary. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this bursary, and I am deeply appreciative of your support. This bursary enables me the opportunity to make yet another dream come true. I am very grateful for this. Thank you once again.
