Empowering diversity in Law: PH Attorneys' Candidate Legal Practitioner Bursary Programme

20 July 2023 492
PH Attorneys value Diversity, and to embrace this value, they annually award bursaries to deserving BEE candidate legal practitioners at Group firms.

The PH Candidate Legal Practitioner Bursary Programme was launched in 2014 and since then, 94 bursaries have been awarded to the amount of over R 1,755,000-00 in total.

The programme takes place in three rounds each year, in order to accommodate firms who make appointments at different times of the year. A Group firm who has appointed a first-year candidate legal practitioner in that year, can apply for a bursary on behalf of the candidate, which is then evaluated against certain set criteria.

For the year 2023, 14 bursaries to the amount of R15,000.00 per candidate were awarded. Bursaries are paid directly to the candidates, with the aim to assist candidates to get on their feet and to help cover any costs that a candidate may incur during the first few months of their articles.

These bursaries have made a significant difference in the lives of the candidates, as the below testimonials will reflect.

I am forever grateful for the Phatshoane Henney Group. This bursary has helped me show gratitude towards my parents for emotionally and financially getting me through university to obtain my law degree. I know, that even today as a Candidate Legal Practitioner, they will continue to support me. I owe them everything and more!

The bursary meant a great deal to me because it allowed me to pay off a number of debts which were stressing me out. It also allowed me to assist my mother with some of her obligations that she was struggling with now that my brother has started university. How it has helped catapult my legal career? The bursary helped catapult my legal career by enabling me to focus thereon without having to try and do odd jobs on the weekends to pay for the abovementioned debts.

I am extremely thankful for the bursary that was awarded to me by the PH Group. As a Candidate Attorney , there are always extra expenses that are not accounted for, and the bursary has really helped ease this burden. It has also allowed me to think further into my legal career by affording me an opportunity to study towards the conveyancing and notary exams and registering for lectures when the need arises. It is a really great initiative, and I am truly appreciative of it. Thank you.

Obtaining the bursary was first and foremost a privilege but also a blessing in disguise. I had outstanding student debt which I incurred during my studies and the bursary allowed me to settle that debt, allowing me to focus my energy on this new journey. The bursary also allowed me to create a conducive work environment which caters to my current needs as a candidate attorney. Most importantly, the bursary afforded me peace of mind.

I am grateful for this opportunity, bearing in mind how hard or difficult it is to secure Articles, because there are thousands of law graduates out there. To be afforded such an opportunity is an opportunity of a life time. I am passionate about law and this allows me to fulfil my dream as I am saving from the stipend that we get so that next year I can spread my wings further in doing my Masters in Corporate Law. This bursary helped me as I am being exposed to different legal fields. I will be starting in a commercial department next week, so this opportunity will help me to grow and have more knowledge of the law.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to Phatshoane Henny for seeing me worthy enough to be a recipient of this bursary. I was thrilled to learn of my selection for this bursary, and I am deeply appreciative of your support. This bursary enables me the opportunity to make yet another dream come true. I am very grateful for this. Thank you once again.
